When Is a Fund Ready for an Internal CFO?
AUM matters, but it is not the only—or always the best—measure of finance and operations complexity.

A concentrated fund with one vehicle and stable providers may remain operationally manageable at a higher AUM. A smaller platform with multiple funds, managed accounts, complex allocations, many counterparties, and institutional reporting can require internal leadership much earlier.
Watch the operating signals
Relevant signals include the number of entities and accounts, valuation complexity, frequency of reporting, investor concentration, regulatory expectations, provider-management demands, and the amount of decision-making that remains with the founder or CIO.
Prepare before the search
The manager should define the role, organize the records, document recurring procedures, and establish the software environment before the new hire arrives. Internalization works best as a planned transfer—not an emergency response to complexity.
